BrainChip (ASX:BRN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading chip manufacturer, Socionext America Inc.
Socionext brings the expertise and the know-how of developing and manufacturing application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) and is expected to work with BrainChip to deploy its spiking neural network (SNN) technology onto a chip.
This partnership advances the development of BrainChip’s Akida Neuromorphic System-on-Chip (NSoC).
The Akida technology is now being trialled with a number of ADAS and autonomous vehicle companies for use in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Because BrainChip’s AI technology enables the processing of data and information at the source it is ideal in applications vision applications such as ADAS, vision guided robotics, and surveillance, where data needs to be processed quickly and efficiently.

Socionext is a system on a chip company formed from the former chip manufacturing businesses of Fujitsu and Panasonic. It boasts 2,500 employees worldwide and his headquartered in Japan.
BrainChip says that Socionext has “demonstrated success in delivering the highest quality product with an efficient time-to-market record for its partners” and hopes that its partnership will accelerate the path to market for Akida.
BrainChip’s Chief Development Officer Anil Mankar said that “after a great deal of investigation and diligence, it is clear that Socionext has the commitment, competency, intellectual property and desire to work with us on the implementation and launch of Akida.”
Both parties are now working to negotiate the Definitive Agreement that is expected to be finalised in the coming months. BrainChip says that both parties are already progressing the “necessary preparatory works.”
The company said that “since inception, it has been committed to providing an artificial intelligence solution as an integrated circuit.”
BrainChip has already created a design that is very compact, flexible, provides low-latency and is low-power for AI Edge applications and the MoU with Socionext is the next step on the path to production and commercialisation.
